The Rather Friendly Art Company
Privacy Notice

How we look after your details

Version 1.4, 10 October 2026. This notice covers our website, ratherfriendlyart.com: the “Looking for original art?” mailing list on our homepage and our Founding Artist page, and artist applications and the artist waitlist on our Founding Artist page.

Who we are

The Rather Friendly Art Company Limited (company number 17484832), registered in England and Wales, is the controller of the personal details described here. For anything about your details, email info@ratherfriendlyart.com.

If you apply to be a Founding Artist

What we collect

Your name and any artist or trading name, email, phone (if you give it), where you're based, your Instagram and website (if you give them), where you sell now, what you tell us about you and your work, your main medium and price range, the photos and titles of your three pieces, whether you're happy for us to use photos of your work to promote us, how you heard about us, and anything else you choose to tell us. We also record when you ticked each confirmation, which versions of this notice and our acceptable images policy you saw, and, separately, whether you asked for our news.

Why we use it

To assess your application, reply to you about it and, if you're invited, take it forward to Round 2 and your artist agreement. Our lawful basis is taking steps at your request before entering into a contract with you. “How did you hear about us?” is used only for reporting on where applications come from.

Who sees it

Sally, who leads our selection, and any guest or independent curator reviewing your application. Your photos are kept privately and used only to review your application (unless you've told us we can use them to promote us, see below) until you accept an artist agreement during set-up. We never sell your details.

How long we keep it

  • Yes (invited to Round 2): kept with your full application. If you become a Founding Artist, your artist agreement explains how we use your details from then on.
  • Unfortunately, not the right fit: deleted 12 months after our decision.

Using photos of your work to promote us (your choice)

The form asks whether you're happy for us to use photos of your work to promote The Rather Friendly Art Company, for example on our website and social media, always credited to you. It's entirely up to you and isn't a condition of becoming a Founding Artist. We record your answer and when you gave it. You can change your mind at any time by emailing info@ratherfriendlyart.com; we'll then stop using your photos in anything new.

Our news (optional)

If you tick “Send me occasional news”, we'll record that separately. It never affects your application, and you can unsubscribe from any email.

If you join the artist waitlist

We keep your name, email, main medium and any Instagram or website you give us, so we can email you when our next intake opens. We keep them until then, and you can ask us to remove them at any time.

If you sign up to hear when we launch

We collect your email, your first name if you give it, and what brings you here if you tell us. We use them only to email you about our launch and, now and then after that, with company news. Our lawful basis is your consent. Nothing is sent until you confirm your email using the link we send you. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your details at any time. We record when you signed up, which page you signed up on (our homepage or our Founding Artist page), the consent wording you agreed to and the version of this notice. This list is kept completely separate from artist applications.

Where your details are kept

Applications, photos and sign-ups are stored privately on our own website hosting (GoDaddy), in a folder that can't be opened from the web. Only Sally and any guest or independent curator reviewing applications can see them, through a password-protected page. Emails about your application are sent from and to our own company mailboxes. Our website also keeps a copy of each email it sends you for 30 days, so we can check it was sent and send it again if it went astray; a copy of an email that couldn't be sent is kept until we've dealt with it, and then for no more than 30 days. When we send launch emails to the buyer list, we may use an email marketing service (such as MailerLite) under a contract that requires it to keep your details secure and use them only on our instructions. Where any provider stores details outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK–US Data Bridge.

Saving your progress

So you can leave the application and come back, your answers and photos are saved in your own browser on your device. They aren't sent to us until you press “Send my application”, and they're cleared from your browser once it has been sent. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies on this page.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your details, object to or restrict how we use them, ask for a copy to take elsewhere, and withdraw consent at any time. Email info@ratherfriendlyart.com and we'll reply within a month. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your details, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), though we'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.
